About Us
Who we are...
The Don Johnson Memorial Team honors the generous and caring nature of a great man who is gone but will never be forgotten. Don has a long list of titles and awards , but his greatest accomplishments are the values that he instilled in his children and grandchildren. Thus, his legacy of giving continues. We have raised over $70,000.00 for juvenile diabetes since forming the Don Johnson Memorial Team in 2008.
What we are doing...
We are proud and excited to announce the beginning of a new “ground breaking” program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus Ohio. This program helps families with diabetic children get insulin pumps and supplies that are needed in this fight against diabetes.
A little about Don...
Don Johnson, a.k.a. "The Kokomo Kid" won his first title in 1964 and continued to win 26 national PBA titles. He is well known for his "perfect" 299 game in the 1970 Firestone Tournament of Champions. He won PBA Player of the Year two years in a row in 1971 and 1972. Additionally, he won the Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award in 1977, along with 3 American Bowling Congress Championships. He was also voted one of Bowling Magazine's "20 Best Bowlers of the Century." Trying to put the honor into perspective, (determined by writers, historians, and Hall of Fame bowlers), he said, "I've had back-to-back bowlers of the year, I won 26 PBA titles, bowled 30 perfect games, and got elected to five different halls of fame. But to be voted eighth-best bowler of the century ... how can you beat an award like that?" Don has been inducted into the PBA, USBC/ABC, Indiana State, Kokomo (Indiana), Summit County (Akron, Ohio) and the Howard County (Indiana) Halls of Fame. In addition to his many accolades, Don was a world-class teacher, instructing students from more than 20 countries. He was the lead instructor for the Professional Bowling Camps, wrote an instructional book, and produced three best-selling bowling videos. Most recently Don was voted number eight in the PBA's "50 Greatest Players" list for the PBA's 50th Anniversary.
